Incident 1:
Million Dollar smiles:
I was traveling enroute Naggar, a small castle near Manali. The river Beas was flowing alongside the road with full zest, roaring as it gushed by the rocks, in full splendor. There were tiny suspension bridges over the river for crossing. I looked at the some of the bridges: dilapidated and almost in ruins.
As we crossed the tiny villages, we saw plenty schoolchildren in red uniforms, sprinting to reach their schools. They had to travel many kilometers to reach their schools which were far away. I saw the smiles in their faces. They must be leaving quite early and traveling through the hills and over those suspension bridges. None of them looked complaining or cribbing. Seeing those priceless smiles full of optimism and hope, despite their hardships made me count my blessings.
We crib always, despite all those things that we have. But here these kids were an inspiration. Despite their adversities they were happy. Looking up at the bright blue sky and newer horizons.
Incident 2:
The Art Exhibition.
There were stunning displays of art all around the gallery. People marveled in awe. Some of the paintings were so beautiful that my jaw dropped!I could never do this. In one corner , one of the artists was working on his latest piece. As I went closer , I realized he was painting not with his hands but his mouth. The brush was swiftly moving on the canvas. There was beauty in that moment. A surreal beauty. No one could imagine a person devoid of hands could create something so stunningly beautiful!
I pondered. There would be so many of us , who wouldn't be able to do it even with two hands and this talented artist drew pictures for us to see with the help of his mouth.
My faith in hope was restored. Nothing is truly impossible if one has the passion and the urge to break barriers to look up!
Incident 3:
The vegetable vendor.
It is a crowded and extremely busy street. There are so many stalls and hawkers calling out to buyers to buy their wares. Deals were vocal. Bargaining was on in full swing. A man with a vegetable and fruit cart was urging his clients to buy. "Season's best fruit ma'am! Best price for you!"
Days and weeks passed. Months and years passed. The market was even more crowded. Hawkers called out to buyers just the same way. The vegetable vendor's cart was missing.
I looked around. And then spotted a huge departmental store. The vendor was sitting at the cash counter, smiling and talking to the customers.
I smiled. The man who called out to customers was now the owner of a huge store. What a transition!
What is not possible if one is optimistic, hardworking and believes in their dreams?
Incident 4:
The Breakfast lady
It was a routine morning in Mangalore. Everyone was in a rush to go to work. For a quick breakfast everyone dropped in at Swati Breakfast Centre.
The lady behind the counter was smiling as she dished out steaming hot idlis and Medhu Wadas to her customers.
Her daughter narrates her story. How Shanti was duped by her relatives after her husband's death and she lost her house and all her belongings. All this did not deter her to start her small business and be financially independent to take care of her children.
A true inspiration, Shanti is a living example of how life does not stop at a hurdle , but moves on and urges us to move on, be inspired and inspire others as well!
Optimism is truly the key to happiness. It all boils down to our perspective!
As a wise man once said, "Two people stare put of the same prison bars,
One sees mud , the other sees stars!"
