The home echoes with laughter.
Its a get-together after eons.
Masi prepares her signature "Chole bhature"
While cousins wait , impatiently.
Moving to and fro,
Inhaling the fragrance from the kitchen.
Why doesn't the clock move quicker to lunch time?
Giggles galore.
Playing the customary family Ludo
Teasing and cheating.
The one spoilsport , who would upturn the Ludo set , just because he lost!
Friendly banter.
Never ending chatter.
Winter mornings.
Roof top get-togethers.
Waiting for the sun, while sipping piping hot elaichi tea.
Hearing grandpa's stories.
Traveling through yesteryears.
Seeing old family albums.
"No! This is not me!"
A feeling of nostalgia.
More laughter and teasing.
A bag full of Memories.
Those impromptu excursions.
Family picnics.
Loud , noisy Antaksharis.
"She is in my team!"
The disinterested uncle.
Disoriented jigs!
Enacting mami's "phoren" accent.
and then hiding behind grand-dad.
A bus full of Happiness.
Who will get the coveted window seat?
Kiddish Fights!
Two minutes of not talking.
Easy patch -ups.
Team work.
Spotting raw mangoes.
One person on the guard.
One climber.
One collector.
Being chased by the gardener.
Not getting caught.
Victory!
Sharing the cut raw mangoes.
A dash of pepper and salt.
Pure bliss!
The shade of the Big banyan tree.
Mass oil massages.
Running away only to be caught and dragged.
Frowning and complaining.
Midnight gossip sessions.
Talking under bed sheets.
shhh shhh when an elder passed by.
Pretending to be asleep.
Hunger pangs.
Quietly tip-toeing to the kitchen.
Piping hot 1 am Maggi.
Ah! The joys of togetherness!
I write this with a smile as I recollect not just a single day but a series of family moments.
The chaos, the laughter, the giggles, the smiles, the talk-a-thons! Cousins meeting after a long gap, sharing stories, aunts and uncles with different and varied personalities, some jovial, some stern. The memory keepers: Grandparents. Always not answering who is the favorite grandchild.
Through petty fights, family jokes, drama, lots of noise, there is an invisible string that connects everyone. The string that bonds everyone, irrespective of their differences. Differences in character, personality, interests and opinions. The string that ties everyone through thick and thin.
These simple, ordinary joys are in fact quite a treasure in themselves. Priceless moments of happiness and nostalgia.
Optimism stems through this bonding. The fact that there is someone with you, whatever the odds provides immense satisfaction and the courage to face any obstacle.
And somewhere behind all those tantrums, lies a deep love and longing for this togetherness.
Be it a simple meal cooked with affection, where your grand mom coaxes you for a second helping, or be it a simple walk with grand dad that inspires you and teaches you more about life than any book can.
There is something about togetherness, which is beyond words. It is a feeling that can be cherished for years to come!
