because i m a girl..

pic taken @ vrindavan,UP...

someone shouted from below..."saanp wala saanp wala...[snake fellow]" i readied my cam..n rushed down the stairs for a close shot, opened the old wooden door, my eyes searchin the snake-guy...
a few seconds late and he had left..
my cam focused now on a group of kids..eyein my cam shyly n giggling..nudgin and whisperin whether i would click their pictures..
five minutes later i m their portfolio didi..clickin away natural shots of this innocent lot having no-worldly sense, their priority lying in who would get to bat next!
i notice two girls..gazing from a distance..i signal them to come closer for a pic..
they hesitate..look at each other.Meanwhile the eleven yr old boy next to me says," uski photo kyun le rahe ho..kaali hai..bhootni"
i lower my camera, wid a burning urge to hit him on his head.
" tumhare se to bohot sundar hai" i mutter in a harsh whisper..[making a mental note not to click a single shot of this rude bully!]
she s bout to turn away..i run after her and make her sit on the bench..
she is so cute i notice..dusky complexion but aesthetic features and an adorable grin..
after ten mins of conversing she asks if she can go.."ghar pe gussa karenge" i show her the pic i clicked. "dhanyavaad" and then shes gone..
everytime i look at this pic, i ponder...

who told the kid that black is ugly?
why were both the girls treated to be dregs and outcasts...?
why was there an air of superiority when he uttered those words?

cause the hard hittin truth of our society is that: along with family values, cultures, morals and under the guise of traditions a large section of our society passes away this knowledge to their children too..
and as the child grows.. he sees it all around him..wen ppl tell him.."U re not a sissy girl..stop cryin! BOYS DONT CRY.."
when his aunt tells him..." we want u to marry a fair girl munna!" [ so what if munna is an ugly little duckling? duh!]
the sad..doleful..morose..bitter truth of our society..
no wonder we have a sex ratio of approx 785: 1000 girls to boys in our country..
no wonder we have dowry deaths..
no wonder there are shameless doctors who carry out sex determination tests..
no wonder that in a country where people worship godessess, shout "jai mata di", wash the feet of little girls during navratri there are still abortions by duress..there are still cases of bride-burning..there EXISTS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.. and there are feeble chances of it ceasing..as long as such janus-faced people exist in our society, as long as a woman stands up for herself..as long as the huge, morbid, abominable wall between girls and boys doesnt collapse for the better...

Loved the post.... :)
It is bitter and atrocious how discrimination prevails in our society based on color. But you know, unconsciously Most of the people are conditioned to approve these thoughts...
It's unfortunate.....

Cheers!!

Hello Divsi!
This is my first time at your blog and I was really touched to read the topics which have touched your heart and inspired you to write about them.

There are lots of things which are amiss in this world, in our lives but one thing which can set everything right is sensitivity.

This is the qualities which I cherish in your writing.
Keep blogging!

Great post Divsi, and about a very common issue in our society. Even I was taught the same thing in childhood. Reminded of a chapter in Hindi textbook "Ladki"

You have taken the picture of the dark child, in Vrindaavan..

When Krishna came as Krishna, He had dark-complexion.

His blessings are on you, dear friend.

Thank you for the entire page for comments :P

I agree with @Singh Amit... subconsciously we all practice these things... coz we do see them all around us... and somewhere... we may start practicing too... and it is unfortunate...

nice blog and really nice post!!i get so pissed off when i c those fairness cream ads ..the western world is getting artificial tan to look dusky and indians "blessed" with it r trying to get rid of it!! but couldnt believe a 11 yr old would have such ideas!

Me said...

Nice point brought up...

High-time we shud ban fairness creams ads... they are so degrading...

Well, am fair-skinned and I crave for a dsuky complexion... ofcourse I can do with some tan... and some bronze make-up... but personally I find dusky, very beautiful and more Indian than anyone else...

Kudos to the post.

u deserve far more than these awards ..
anyways..
we r racist to the core..the white skin is always preferred to the black one..I don't want to go to the historical aspect of it.

But its really painful...I am from a part of the world where ugly things like gender bias, racism exist to the core...Its agonising and hurting..
Anyways the post was very touching!

This is the sad story of our country. Its time we changed such things and that change can begin only from us and our homes.

Liked your template.

Buddy d post is simply d best!!!

I feel d real criminals r widin r society itself who still indulge and spread the color bias and the superstitions... V should first fight these criminals and den fight the terrorist across d border...

bondgal_rulz said...

I commented on this post!! Damn the blogger!!

Very cute pic!!! Ans the girls are so pretty!!

It's a pity that darkness is still down upon as some kind of a curse in ou country. The number of advertisements for fairness creams bear testimony to this fact.

We are a nation who do not discriminate on the basis of discrimination. We discriminate equally on the basis of caste, colour, creed, religion, gender and economic status.

Incredible India. *sigh*

Hi Cyclops!! Yeah u must have guessed it... yr profile one eyed photo made me name you this!! hehe!!

Ohhh I seee!! U 2 have a portrait of children ehh? Good!

You know what Divsi? It is another matter, which all my male friends may agree, I am sure, that a female blogger always gets 100 comments easily, much akin to a female being followed on the road in the real world and as I keep tellng the women in my life that they just need to call and 100 men will come to them while we men can cry ourselves hoarse and only 5 women may come to us... ... such is the character of human beings....

But still I find you different among all the women.. and that too in a teenager.. u seem to have spark... a spark that is still not a fire... a fire that needs to be lighted in many of us... to make this world a better place...

Maybe one day you will be that Fire.. maybe you will not, but then if you do not then it will not be your fault.. it will be the fault of your circumstances.., your marriage.. your family... and so on.. it is upto you ..to change all that and change this world..

What you have said in this blog is very correct... why do we think black is ugly? I have seen black dark people with perfectly photogenic shapr features.. beautiful.. carved in ebony... i wish I could shoot them and present them to eternity here...

Sigh...
Hmmm u did not like my sunset photo? Do pls see that by clicking the photo to open the picture only (jpg)... When I shot it the sun was really huge... u can see it only when u click the picture....

ShantanuDas said...

Ohh btw my child portrait is also of a child who is darkkkkkkkkkkk being a Tamilian.. but see .. is she any inferior to anybody? Noooooooooo!!

And don't forget Naomi Campbell!
LOL !! YEAHH!!

well to begin with i must tell u,
there are many comments that i get on my posts...some of them stay with me alwys n will remain engraved in my mind till eternity and this is precisely one of them!:)
so a heart felt thankyou!!!!:)

i agree wid u to an extent wen u say girls get more comments easily..though yeah i wont deny sum guys do see pure literary competence, just like girls!!

this portrait of kids is one of my personal favs...i m glad u like it n think on the same lines as me!:)

as for the spark...i wish i cud ignite it in evryone around me so that its useful and transforms into a glowing fire to betta our world:) n this blog is one tiny attempt to do it!:)

we ll definitely click pics of beautiful dusky people and put it up here to re-define beauty:)

p.s: i loved the tamilian kid's pic!:) will chk out the sun one righto!
